Historic Preservation
Georgetown, Colorado

There's something special about an old house - whether it's a sense of place and time, personal history, or simply the joy of craftsmanship found in old buildings.

Historic Georgetown, a Colorado non-profit corporation, was created to initiate, encourage and integrate efforts to preserve the rich heritage of the Georgetown/Silver Plume National Historic Landmark District. The new organization purchased the Hamill House, the home of Englishman William Hamill, a successful mine owner, banker and politician of 19th century Colorado, to restore this elegant home as a museum. Over the years, we have acquired other properties in our Five Part Program - a miner's cottage, a professional man's house, a merchant's home and a log cabin - to guarantee that the history we preserve includes a variety of lifestyles.

"As Williamsburg dramatizes the founding propositions of 17th and 18th century America, as Mystic is to the whaling industry, so Georgetown and Silver Plume without rival can tell the story of the American West in the 19th century."

- Barbara S. Hornby,
Past President, Colorado Historical Society
